Jim Rand

I'm Jim Rand, founder and principal consultant at Qualcosa Group. I work directly with small and mid-size businesses to get real, measurable value from their data and from AI.

I've spent over 30 years in technology — starting at the help desk and working my way up through systems & network engineering, cloud infrastructure, architecture, and eventually into analytics, data science, and AI. I've built and led teams at every level, across companies like Workday, Cisco, biotech firms, healthcare organizations, hardware manufacturers, and startups. Through all of it, the work has always been the same: understand the real problem, build the right solution, and put it in the hands of the people who need it.

At Workday, I founded the first infrastructure analytics function and grew it into the centralized analytics organization for the 8,000-person Product & Technology group. The team I built — data scientists, engineers, analysts, and BI developers — drove over $20 million in documented savings through outage prediction, capacity planning, and operational analytics. I led the enterprise rollout of AI coding assistants to 5,000 developers and built the ROI analysis that went to the Board of Directors.

More recently, I've been building applied AI systems: production RAG pipelines, skills analytics platforms, and developer tools. I've also been teaching — helping teams across every discipline understand what AI can do for them and building the workshops that make it practical.

I started Qualcosa Group because I saw the same problems at small and mid-size businesses that I'd solved at enterprise scale. These companies have data they're not using, teams that are curious about AI but don't know where to start, and technology decisions that could use a senior perspective. But hiring a full-time analytics leader or AI strategist is expensive, slow, and risky — and most growing businesses don't need one forty hours a week. They need one for the right project at the right time.

That's how Qualcosa Group works. When you engage the firm, you work with me directly — the person who's been doing this work for three decades, not a junior associate or a rotating team. I bring in specialized talent when a project calls for it, but you always have a senior hand on the work. It's the model that lets me give clients enterprise-grade expertise without enterprise-grade overhead.
